Shout-Outs!

The Bible contains six admonishments to homosexuals and 362 admonishments to heterosexuals. That doesn't mean that God doesn't love heterosexuals. It's just that they need more supervision.

UPDATES: Please note the details of meeting time & location, don't be late!!!

Date: Sunday, 25 October 2009
Meeting time: 4:45pm (Tour starts at 5pm sharp)
Meeting location: NLB Plaza
Tickets cost: $35 per head

Singapore has some fantastic architectural spaces and every year Architours are conducted to give us a more in depth introduction to what's new and cool in our city. ArchiTours are a celebration and exploration of the city’s best buildings, streets, and spaces. TheBearProject would like to invite you to our new icons of consumption :p ... an architour of iconic designs for surprising and delighting consumers to encourage them to spend! Here's a blurb from the website at: http://www.archifest.sg/index.php/humanity/event/architours_hype_hunt/tour

"The cross into the new millennium saw a huge increase in the popularity of iconic design, as well as a wider recognition of the value of creativity in both economic and human terms. For architects, the embrace of creativity in the city is about more than producing architectural icons. It is also about designing for surprise and delight – creating architecture that brings nourishment to its occupants while also perhaps setting and reflecting trends. In this tour we seek out some places and spaces of retreat, entertainment, and recreation that have delighted their occupants. Though these are manifestations of a society of consumption, they also give something back to the people of the city." - excerpt from ArchiFest 2009 website

Seats are going fast, so I will close this event by 18th October 5pm so please sign up fast for those who are interested. Thanks!

CLOSED: Movie Outing "9", 12th Sep 09, Saturday

Thanks to all who came for the movie outing today. It was really quite a sight to have 28 bears/TBP supporters gather together :) Although the movie didn't live up to expectations for some, I'm sure everyone had a good time catching up and getting to know new friends. Hope to see the newbies join us more in future outings :) Cheers~ Stonedwin

Hi everyone,

With so many exciting movies opening in September, its time again for a movie outing! And we are kicking off with the exciting animated film '9', produced by Tim Burton.

Synopsis:
A new era in animated storytelling begins on 9.9.09. Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton (The Corpse Bride, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory) and Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Nightwatch) join forces to produce wunderkind director Shane Acker’s distinctively original and thrilling tale. 9 stars Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer and Crispin Glover and features the music of Danny Elfman.

When 9 (The Lord of the Ring’s Elijah Wood) first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world. All humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction. Despite being the neophyte of the group, 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good. They must take the offensive if they are to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place. As they'll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on them. --© Focus Features

Toy Games & Comic Convention

Dear Bear friends and supporters,

Han and I just went down to Suntec City 4th floor to set up the Sir Fong booth.

If you've been impressed by Da Vinci's amazing designs from the Renaissance Period, your eyes will pop when you come for the Toy Games & Comic Convention. We've come a long way since we were inspired by the genius of Da Vinci (he's homosexual incidentally), and the main difference is this: at the convention, you can buy your inspirations to own.

My books are created to inspire too. To raise the standards of Scientific passion in Singapore, then Asia. Without Science, we can never progress to the age of air-con, internet dating and computer games. So do come to my booth A25 to get a few copies for all your nieces, nephews and students!

This year, there will be several items for your consideration:

1. Sir Fong's Adventures In Science Book 2 ($10 - Usual Price $13+)
2. Sir Fong's Adventures In Science Book 1 ($10 - UP$13+)
3. Lyra Dobble colouring set ($6 - discount of 20%)
4. Lyra Giotto Grafix marker set ($8 - discount of 20% from planned price - new product)

I'll be there the whole day to sign every book and take pictures with all you handsome fellas. Thank you!

Place: Suntec City Hall 402 + 403
Date: 14-16th Aug (Fri - Sun)
Booth: Artists Alley A25
Time: 11am - 9pm (Fri, Sat)
11am - 8pm (Sun)

TBP Healthy Sunday – HSBC Tree Top Walk @ MacRitchie Reservoir Park, 28 June '09

Dear All,

I sincerely thank you, friends and loved ones, for a really great time on Sunday morning. Beautiful-macho-funshine bears, comfortable surroundings, excellent weather and a peaceful environment had brought us joy and laughter.
Thank you for sharing all the sweet moments today. See you again at TheBearProject Anniversary chalet next month on 18/7/09.

With love always,
martinn

It's time for the bears to connect with mother nature again!

The HSBC TreeTop Walk (HSBC TTW) is the highlight of several long hiking routes in MacRitchie that brings you through different stages of mature secondary forest. The first of its kind in Singapore and in the region, this free-standing suspension bridge connects the two highest points (Bukit Peirce and Bukit Kalang) in MacRitchie and offers a bird's eye view of the community of plants and animals that live in the forest canopy. The total length of the walkway is about 250m and its height from the forest floor varies, with the highest point at 25m.

Come frolic with me, Martinn, and other wonderful creatures from the wild, as we take in the sights and the fresh air!

The distance to the entrance of the TreeTop Walk is approximately 4.5 km (1.5 - 2 hour walk) from the MacRitchie Reservoir Park and 2.5 km (45 mins - 1 hr walk) from the carpark at Venus Drive. Therefore, a round trip including the TreeTop Walk is about 7 to 10 km (3-5 hours depending on your walking pace).

Date: 28th June 2009 (Sunday)
Time: 10:00am
Meeting point: MacRitchie Reservoir Park Carpark @ Venus Drive (off Upper Thomson Road)

*We will commence the walk at 10:30am sharp.
But no one likes to wait so let’s be early as we walk together hand-in-hand…

It's gonna be hot, so wear caps, sunblock, and bring enough water! I'll be bringing my brolly! ;)

Always fabulous,
Martinn

Hi Everyone,

I would like to thank everyone who attended the June movie/ dinner outing. Your presence has made this lous... ermm... i mean 'not so great' movie so much more enjoyable!!!! :P

Also i just wanna give a great big hug to all those who made the effort to come for dinner even tho they can't join us for the movie... I'm especially touched...

So thank you everyone, i hope you guys have as much fun as i did...

Martinn

************************************************************************

Dear All,

I would like to begin by apologizing to those who are attending both movies on Saturday. Regrettably, we have to cancel the 2nd show - UP as the release date has been postponed from 4th June to 3rd September (as per Cathay website). In addition, Blood The Last Vampire will be changed to the 5.40pm show in a nicer, bigger theater and with a better timing.

After the movie, I would like to propose that we go for dinner at Shokudo, The Heeren. (Other suggestions are most welcomed)

Please accept my sincere apologies for any inconveniences caused. See you on Saturday 5.20pm @ Cineleisure Orchard.

Love,
Martinn

Blood The Last Vampire
Synopsis
On the surface, Saya is a stunning 16-year old girl, but that youthful exterior hides the tormented soul of a 400 year-old “halfling”.

Born to a human father and a vampire mother, she has for centuries been a loner, obsessed with using her samurai skills to rid the world of vampires, all the while knowing that she herself can survive only on blood like those she hunts. When she is sent onto an American military base in Tokyo by the clandestine organization she works for, Saya immediately senses that this may be her opportunity to finally destroy Onigen, the evil patriarch of all vampires. Using her superhuman strength and her sword, she begins to rid the base of its evil infestation in a series of spectacular and elaborate showdowns. However, it is not until she forms her first human friendship in centuries with the young daughter of the base’s general that Saya learns her greatest power over Onigen may well be her ability for human connection…

Renowned producers Bill Kong (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Hero) and Abel Nahmias (11 Commandments, La Beuze) team up with director Chris Nahon (Kiss of the Dragon) on this English language vampire slaying adventure, where the hope of the world rests on a beautiful young woman.

TOP GIRLS, Gala Evening: Fund-Raiser for AWARE, 30 May 2009

AWARE is raising funds by having a Gala evening of TOP GIRLS, scheduled for Saturday, 30 May. It will be a great opportunity to put aside more weighty issues and celebrate life and renewal together.

The Caryl Churchill play is among the best 100 plays of the 20th Century on the British National Theatre’s Millennium list. It won the Obie Award in 1983. The Wessex Theatre production is directed by Daniel Toyne, and has a seven member all woman cast playing 16 roles in all! The play has some coarse language but promises an evening of heart-warming truths, and laughter.

Synopsis
A classic of feminist literature, Top Girls opens in a restaurant where Marlene is hosting a dinner party for five friends. The five female guests are all either long-dead or fictional characters from literature or paintings. As the play develops we see other aspects of Marlene’s life; a hard-bitten career woman employed at the 'Top Girls' employment agency, her interactions with colleagues, clients and with the family she left behind. The narrative and themes of this play focus on the various roles of women in society and relationships.

Presented in association with AWARE - Singapore’s leading advocacy group dedicated to promoting gender equality.

It is being staged from 27th May to 30th May. Tickets for the Gala Night on 30th May are at $80 each. This comes with an invite to a reception brought to us by Harry’s and WineGuru. Do support this great cause!

Please call AWARE Centre 6779 7137 or email tickets@aware.org.sg for more information as well as buy tickets.

(CLOSED) TheBearProject Goes to KL!!! (May 1-3)

Ok guys, now for one of the year's first major events...
A road trip to KL!!

The idea started when some of us got talking with some of the KL bears and thought it would be cool to do a KL-SGBear Exchange this year. SG bears would go up to KL for one weekend and they would host us, and they would come down and we would host them.

Tentatively, we are looking to go up to KL by luxury coach on the Labour Day weekend - leaving on Friday morning and coming back to Singapore on Sunday evening. That will be two nights in KL. We haven't nailed down a detailed programme, butI am trying to put together a "KL food tour" with makan places recommended by Straits Times food critic Wong Ah Yoke. If you haven't been to KL recently, I hear there are a lot of new malls that have opened up. Oh, there is also a big party over the long weekend which I hear a lot of the regional partygoers are going to.
Anyway, here are the details of the package we are considering. The coach is the "first class" type, double decker with a lounge downstairs and TVs in all the 29 seats. The company (Luxury Travel) is the one recommended by comedian Moses Lim.

The cost is as follows:
  • Twin sharing – S$ 236.00 per person

  • Single Room – S$ 369.00 per person

  • 3rd Pax – S$ 205.00 per person
The package includes:-
  • Return coach Singapore – Kuala Lumpur on Luxury Exclusive class double decker
  • 2 Nights Deluxe accommodation inclusive of breakfast at Sheraton Imperial or Hotel Istana or similar
Given that it includes two nights stay and first-class coach travel, we think the price is pretty reasonable (even in these tough times) and it will be more fun if we all stayed in the same hotel. Those who would rather drive or fly up, you're welcome to meet us there too.

Right now, we have already about 7-8 guys signed up. If we can get 27-28 guys to go, we can have the coach all to ourselves, which will be a lot more fun of course! So please let us know if you'd like to go. If you have any questions about the trip, please also do post them here and we'll get them answered.

Hope to hear from all of you. We're open to suggestions too about better tour packages or things we can do in KL.

Our last impromptu BearProject trip to Taiwan was really great fun and I'm sure this trip will be no different. So look up those schedules and block those dates now!! :)

(Closed) An Afternoon of Art / Sat 11th April, 12.30pm

Hi everyone,

Our first event for the month of April will be a bit of departure from all the "back to nature" events we've been having lately! It's time for a bit of culture, a bit of art ("Aarrrrt dahling, it's art!!"). Two fabulous exhibitions have opened in Singapore and they're only a stone's throw from each other (ok, maybe more like 200 metres, but you get the drift)!!!

First up... the "This Is Not A Print!" exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum's new edgy art space 8Q@SAM. It's otherwise known as the "old Catholic High School", which should make it doubly exciting for old boys of Cat High (like me) :)

Singapore Art Museum’s new contemporary wing, 8Q sam presents This is Not a Print!, a selection of over 70 multiples and prints from the Singapore Art Museum’s 1500-piece Tyler Art Collection. From Pop multiples prints by Jasper Johns and David Hockney to the sculpture and conceptual multiples by John Newman, Claes Oldenberg and Roy Lichstenstein, the exhibition traces the trajectories and convergences of the development of print making in Europe and America shaped by the concept of the Artist’s Multiple.

Then. it's across the road to the National Museum, where the costume design work of the incomparable Christian Lacroix is on show!!

The virtuoso haute couture designer Christian Lacroix, who is known for defining the look of the 1980s with its bright colours and extravagant embellishments, presents his splendid costume design work of 20 years for the ballet, theatre and opera in this exclusive exhibition. Lacroix's inspiration for productions such as Carmen, Gaité Parisienne, Othello, Cosi Fan Tutte and Phèdre are eclectic, drawing from a wide variety of sources, and are at once historical and yet modern. In Asia for the very first time, close to 80 spectacular costumes and 60 sketches from the collection of the Centre National du Costume de Scène (National Stage Costume Centre, Moulins, France) and from Lacroix’s personal collection, will take stage at the National Museum of Singapore from March to June 2009.

Here are the details:

"This Is Not A Print" / "Christian Lacroix The Costumer"

Date: 11th April 2009 (Saturday)
Time:
(Pls refer to the itinerary below)
Venue: 8Q@SAM (8 Queen St) & National Museum

(Closed)The Bears go Night Safari! 28 March '09, Saturday, 6.45pm

Hi everyone,

Expecting a quiet entrance into Night Safari, we of TBP instead walked into an ambush of tourists and strange club music. A few toned man-bodies, scantilly-clad, were dancing on a stage surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of onlookers. Fortunately, the odd infusion of "native culture" did nothing to diminish the excitement of seeing a local attraction bustling with genuine anticipation. Seeing the massive crowd, you'd think we were visiting the Jungle section of Disneyland.

Thomas added to the cheer as usual. His supplementary commentary to our heavily-accented tram guide had us in stitches ("and over on your left, we have some hantus."), as the cool night air was pierced by the evil cackle of TBP's laughter. Frequently, the animals' face lit up into a sinister red glow. Fortunately, instead of a hunter's night-vision rifle, they were only staring into Gary's big, long camera lens. The animals tried their best to appear nonchalant. For once, the attractions did not end up on the dinner table for hungry bears. Gradually, even our bears' usual shenanigans gave way to hushed awe as we became totally immersed inside a night world we rarely have a chance to see. We saw the sexy, naked muscular curves of rhinos, crocs with bulbous snouts fed by some hot bearish zoo keeper and even a mountain cat cough up a fur ball. Around ten, we reluctantly left, beaming with pride that at least our country has one really, really cool spot!

We ended up in Upper Bukit Timah Beauty World stretch for dinner, coffee and finally terrorised McDonald patrons till 130am. The hot topic was whether gay stereotypes were valid - triggered by, amongst many other things, a really cute and butch TBP newcomer doing a dainty jigsaw puzzle of some Disney characters - and the conclusion was that we should just embrace ourselves, stereotype or otherwise.

Special mention of CH + KW. It is their 4th anniversary, making them the third known TBP couple to celebrate their unholy union at Night Safari. Thank you all for a roaring great time. To many many more happy gatherings! - Otto

Thebearproject is going to see creatures of the night. In the nice cool evening of the 28th this month, we will turn the spotlight and be amazed by the variety of living things that share our planet. The Night Safari is one of the best zoo attractions in Asia, a place where we can be proud to bring our foreign friends and also spend a unique time away from the usual shopping malls.

Date: 28th March 2009 (Saturday)
Cost: $22 entrance + $10 tram ride
Deadline for signing up: No deadlines. But please add your names to the Comment section to sign up as usual.

Itinerary:

6.45 pm Everyone gathers at the Night Safari ticketing booth

(Closed) Evening Picnic @ Marina Barrage, 28th Feb '09, Saturday, 5-8pm

Hi guys, Mother Nature was a bitch today but i'm glad everyone who came still braved the heavy downpour to support the Evening Picnic @ Marina Barrage... The food was great (savoury pastas & soon keuhs, delectable fried carrot cakes, juicy sausages and fishballs, to-die-for choclate cheese brownies, yummy cream puffs & pies, crispy karrages & spring rolls, delicious ice-creams, thirst-quenching drinks, wine, fruits and many many more!) but the company was even better!!!! I'd like to thank everyone who came down despite the clammy air and the wet floors, i hope it didn't dampen anybody's mood and you guys still had fun... And for the new faces who came today, welcome to the club!!!!

With February coming to a close, it's time for me to take off the hat of Project Manager and pass it to my successor (or successors) Otto & Han... I hope all of you will continue to support them as you did me as they bring you the next round of great TBP events and movie outing this coming March and i can't wait to see what they have up their sleeves!!!!

Once again, thank you for the support this month and i'll see you guys in the upcoming events!!!

-Balenciaga

Fancy a meal under the setting sun overlooking the cityscape as the wind caresses the landscape?

Built across the mouth of the Marina Channel, the Marina Barrage creates Singapore’s 15th reservoir, and the first in the heart of the city. With a catchment area of 10,000 hectares, or one-sixth the size of Singapore, the Marina catchment is the island’s largest and most urbanised catchment. Together with two other new reservoirs, the Marina Reservoir will boost Singapore’s water catchment from half to two-third’s of the country’s land area.

As the water in the Marina Basin is unaffected by the tides, its water level will be kept constant all year round. This is ideal for all kinds of recreational activities such as boating, windsurfing, kayaking and dragonboating etc.

For the replacement event on February, The Bear Project will be organizing an evening picnic at the Marina Barrage. There's food (potluck of cos), great view, friends, great photo opportunities and wide open spaces for bears to roam around, what's not to love!!!

So for those people who are interested, please sign up ASAP as we are going to close the posting on Thursday, 26th Feb to work out the logistics... You are required to bring food (please no chips and snacks... it'll almost be like dinner under the stars) and drinks... If you attendedthe Lo-Hei event last month, you can bring the same food so as not to ponder too much on what you are going to bring.

(CANCELLED) Ride The Original Ducktours – A Land & Sea Adventure, 28 February '09, Saturday, 4-5pm (tbc)

Hi guys,

Due to the weak response of the event, we decided to cancel this event and replace it with another... I'm really sorry to disappoint those that were keen to attend this event... I guess it's not the right time to do something like this yet... No worries, i'm sure we'll be able to do something like this in the future. In the meantime, do check out what the replacement event will be... It'll be equally fun and we won't be restrcited by the number of people attending... Since we are only 1 week away from the event, if you are keen, please sign up and respond ASAP so we can deal with all the logistics and get it over and done with so everyone can have a good time on that day...

Again, let me apologise for the cancellation of the event and hope it will not stop you from joining the many other activites we have planned in the future... ;)
