TOP GIRLS, Gala Evening: Fund-Raiser for AWARE, 30 May 2009

AWARE is raising funds by having a Gala evening of TOP GIRLS, scheduled for Saturday, 30 May. It will be a great opportunity to put aside more weighty issues and celebrate life and renewal together.

The Caryl Churchill play is among the best 100 plays of the 20th Century on the British National Theatre’s Millennium list. It won the Obie Award in 1983. The Wessex Theatre production is directed by Daniel Toyne, and has a seven member all woman cast playing 16 roles in all! The play has some coarse language but promises an evening of heart-warming truths, and laughter.

Synopsis
A classic of feminist literature, Top Girls opens in a restaurant where Marlene is hosting a dinner party for five friends. The five female guests are all either long-dead or fictional characters from literature or paintings. As the play develops we see other aspects of Marlene’s life; a hard-bitten career woman employed at the 'Top Girls' employment agency, her interactions with colleagues, clients and with the family she left behind. The narrative and themes of this play focus on the various roles of women in society and relationships.

Presented in association with AWARE - Singapore’s leading advocacy group dedicated to promoting gender equality.

It is being staged from 27th May to 30th May. Tickets for the Gala Night on 30th May are at $80 each. This comes with an invite to a reception brought to us by Harry’s and WineGuru. Do support this great cause!

Fridae's Milk fundraiser raises S$14,000 for gay community projects

"The fundraising gala premiere of a biopic about America's first openly-gay publicly-elected politician Harvey Milk has raised S$14,000 for Indignation, Pinkdot Singapore and gay filmmaker Loo Zihan's new project.

Fridae's fundraising gala premiere of the critically acclaimed film Milk held on Jan 7 has raised S$14,000 for Indignation, Singapore's annual gay pride season which has been held annually since 2005; Pinkdot Singapore, a campaign advocating "the freedom to love" and gay filmmaker Loo Zihan's new short film project Threshold.

Milk is the second fundraiser organised by Fridae to benefit Indignation. A gala screening of the film Wilde about Irish-born playwright, Oscar Wilde, held last May raised S$10,000 for Indignation and provided a seed fund to establish the Rascals Prize, a biennial award for the best research work related to the subject of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBT) and Singapore."

Great film! Although many commented that they expected more from Gus Van Sant as the director for Milk, the film turned out bold & powerful yet more documentary-like. But I liked it and it certainly awakened that dormant activist part of my being. Kudos to Fridae & PLU to organize this event in aid of fund-raising for Indignation & other gay NPOs! Fridae & Crocodile will present MILK, a biopic about gay rights icon Harvey Milk, on Wednesday, 7 Jan 2009, to raise funds for Indignation, Singapore's gay pride season which has been held annually since 2005.

The fundraiser will benefit Indignation – an annual festival consisting of talks, art exhibitions, readings of plays and poetry, together with some social events, to be held in August 2009 – the same month as the country's national day celebrations. Organised jointly by gay advocacy group People Like Us and other community groups and individuals, the festival started in 2005 as a response to the unreasonable ban on parties for gays and lesbians, and heavy censorship of publications serving the community. All Indignation events are open to the public and are traditionally free of charge, in order to be accessible to everyone.

MILK, which opened in the US last month, is a Gus Van Sant-directed drama about Harvey Milk the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California and who was assassinated shortly after being elected to the San Francisco board of supervisors in 1977.

Explaining the relevance of the film to Singapore and Asian viewers, Alex Au of People Like Us said: "As the first openly gay person to stand for election - and win - Harvey Milk represents audacity. He is the success of hope and imagination over caution and fatalism. Many Asian societies today are not that different from Milk's America of the 1970s. The battles he fought and naysayers he faced we recognise instantly today. Right here in Asia."

Dr Stuart Koe, CEO of Fridae agrees that the film will be inspirational to gay audiences no matter where they are and hopes for them to support the fundraiser.

"The gay community's ongoing struggle for equality faces challenges and obstacles today as it did for Harvey Milk, and it deserves every bit of support we can give it," he said.

Using archival news footage alongside dramatic recreations, the film tells the real-life story of Milk – played by Sean Penn, who left New York City with his boyfriend Scott Smith (James Franco) for San Francisco when he decided in his early 40s that a change was due and he wanted to make something more of his life.

The couple opened a camera shop but found themselves shut out for being openly gay. Milk quickly spoke up against discrimination and asked the gay population to frequent only gay-owned or gay-friendly shops and businesses. Realising that he had the power to motivate and effect change, he decided to run for the city's Board of Supervisors. He won on his third try becoming the country's first openly gay elected official.

The belief that being able to be open about one's sexuality is so paramount that before he was slain, Milk, who taped several versions of his political will, said in one: "If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door."

The Producers Guild of America on Dec 8 announced that MILK is receiving the 2009 Stanley Kramer Award which honours pictures that take on provocative social issues.

Academy Award winner Sean Penn (Best Actor, 2003, Mystic River) has been widely slated to be a frontrunner for another Oscar for his role in the film which is also expected to be nominated in the Best Picture and Director categories.

Let me do a brief recap of what this event is all about:

TheBearProject Charity Art Show

Having established ourselves as a sub-group of the local gay community, we feel the need to go beyond organizing social-networking activities and give something back to society. Seeing that many of our members are from the creative industries, we’ve decided that our first community charity event will be an auction of artwork created by our members. We hope the event will not just strengthen bonds within the group, but also further promote awareness of social responsibility in the gay community.

TheBearProject Charity Art Show features art pieces by 10 members of our group, comprising cartoons, oil paintings and photographic prints. In addition, we are proud to also feature several prominent local artists at the art auction. Our “Friends of TheBearProject” – including conceptual artists Heman Chong and Felicia Low, visual artists Jeremy Sharma and Genevieve Chua, and photographers Tay Kay Chin and Chan Wai Teik - have kindly donated original works in aid of the auction.

All proceeds from the auction will go to The Triangle Project, a community project run by theatre group The Necessary Stage. The Triangle Project was started in 1992 with the aim of providing opportunities for the less privileged to watch theatre. The scheme has proven to be very successful and previous beneficiaries of scheme include The Tent, Grace Haven, Singapore Cheshire Home, SINDA, Muhamadiyah Welfare Home, the Before and After School Care programmes of Family Service Centres, members of the Society for the Physically Disabled and people with HIV/AIDS. We will also donate some of the funds to other minor beneficiaries anonymously.

Otto Fong was a highly regarded Science teacher in Raffles Institution. This year, he just published the first in a series of comic books about Science.

In this event, he shares his experience of coming out to the nation as a gay teacher, how the controversy impacted his life, and how it gave him courage to pursue his lifelong dream of being a fulltime comic artist.

This year, we are bringing back a classic which explores gay issues in Singapore Chinese theatre. Performed in 1992, Another Tribe was written by Otto Fong and is the first local Chinese play to explore gay issues. The original cast, Jackie Liu and Kevin How will be reading for their own roles from over 10 years ago. Together with Otto Fong and the director Kok Heng Leun, they will be present to share with the audience their experiences and thoughts while embarking on such a taboo topic at that time. Renowned writer and playwright Quah Sy Ren will also be on the panel to comment on the play as critic and audience.

Singapore’s 4th annual Pride Season is here again with talks and forums, art and literature, as well as social and outdoor events.

A movie fundraiser and Singapore premiere of the film Wilde, which was held on May 13, had raised S$10,000 for Indignation, the city-state's annual Pride Season.

The film depicted the life story of playwright and poet Oscar Wilde who is today widely celebrated as an artist persecuted for his homosexuality. He was found guilty of "gross indecency” and sentenced to two years' imprisonment with hard labour in 1895. Singapore's Section 377A, which continues to outlaw sexual relations between men up to this day, is descended from this law.

The $10,000 will be used to help fund selected events held during the festival to be held in August as all Indignation events are open to the public and are usually free of charge (unless otherwise stated), in order to be accessible to everyone.

(Top of page: Almost 500 people attended the fundraiser and Singapore premiere of Wilde which was banned by the Singapore Board of Film censors when it was first released in 1997.)

Thanks to SaltWetFish for organising this, it's back to NANAS again! The last trip from my own experience, was really fun and quite an eye-opener. I have never been surrounded by so many dogs! It's really a wonderful thing what they are trying to do for all these animals (there's cats, dogs, horses, etc).

(CLOSED) Film premiere ‘Wilde’ in support of IndigNation, 13th May 08

The film was an enjoyable and a charming one, though at some points it deemed rather tragic minus the mellow dramatics. This film wasn't a usual blockbuster but a good choice for the IndigNation 2008 premiere fund raiser. I enjoyed it tremendously.

Prior to the IndigNation event coming in August, there is a fund raiser in which I think all of us should support.

Fridae.com, in support of People Like Us’ Indignation gay pride season, is organising the Singapore premiere of the film ‘Wilde’ on Tuesday 13 May 2008, at the Lido theatres.

Directed by Brian Gilbert, this 1997 film tells the story of celebrated poet, novelist and playwright Oscar Wilde, who in 1895 was convicted of ‘gross indecency’ under a UK law that was the precursor of Singapore’s infamous Section 377A. Wilde was a martyr to the moral hypocrisy of his time, and which unfortunately still lives on in Singapore.

The film was banned by the Singapore censors when first released. It has now been re-rated under revised film guidelines (post 2002 censorship review) as R21.

Fridae’s gala premiere is intended as a fund-raiser for Indignation, since Indignation events themselves (scheduled for August 2008) are traditionally free of charge, in order to be accessible to everyone. Interesting Chinese TV program discussing Homosexuality

This programme left me very touched... considering the kind of discrimination they had to deal with in China. Yet they overcome it, able to maintain a beautiful relationship of 20 years (well, by now, should be 22 years) and even raise a son together. Hopefully this will inspire you to fight for our rights to love. (Sorry, it's in chinese only. If you don't understand chinese, I'll urge you to get someone to translate for you... )

TheBearProject's Charity Event - The Discussion Continues

...and so we sat down one fine day for a serious discussion of this event (Finally) and we got stuck at the targeted beneficiaries part... which we thought it is only fair that we leave this issue open to you guys!The idea of this event is to raise funds/money for a specific beneficiary. Our targeted beneficiary will not necessarily be a PLU/Gay cause like A.F.A., rather we are opening up our options to reach out to even old folks homes or orphanages (& of course SPCA which... *ahem* is for animals...)

By that, we will raise our funds through an Art Sale. It will be somewhat similar to a "Bake sale" of sorts, only that the art pieces (or crafts) will be displayed/exhibited with a minimum price and those who are interested will have to bid to top the existing prices, so on & so forth.

As for the art pieces, we have come up with a list of people who can contribute their creations. Those who have your artistic talents hidden away from the face of the earth, this is your chance to step forth and contribute something! Examples of art pieces you can contribute are handicrafts, clay figurines, photography (framed), paintings (oil, acrylic, collages etc all framed), digital graphic collages etc etc and the list is endless! USE YOUR IMAGINATION... and see how creative you can go! (I will sent aside another separate post for this)


There will be a panel of Art "curators" which will then decide on which pieces will go for the auction, which pieces won't and how much the minimum bid for the particular piece will be. Those pieces not sold (or didn't make it through the selection process) will then be put on eBay to be sold off. The money will still be sent to the designated beneficiary.

What we will need from you now will be your inputs on which beneficiaries the collected funds will go to. Feel free to comment below in the comment box.

Please state:

- Name of Beneficiary (eg. Ren Ci Hospital & Medicare Center etc.)

- Reasons why we should donate the money to them. (It can be any reason, like because you have volunteered there before and you noticed their lack of funds and donation from the public or you simply like them)

From the inputs we get from all of you guys, the committee will then limit down to one beneficiary that will receive the money. But of course, there will be some research and advising involved to determine which one. Till we can get down to work on the art projects, we must get this out of the way first or at least keep the ball rolling. Once again I must say your inputs will be valued and appreciated.

Chinese New Year Yu-Sheng Pot Luck, 16th Feb 2008 (Saturday)

Happy Lunar New Year to all!

Just wanna announce that there will be a CNY Yu-sheng pot luck party involving other local PLU community groups like ADLUS etc. This event was extended to us at TheBearProject from saltwetfish himself. Thank you so much :D This will be a good opportunity for us to know more people from other groups and exchange ideas.

Its a pot luck party, so everyone going would have to play a part. So far we haven't got a confirm list of what we should bring but I deduced should be mostly carbo-food (as the other groups are already bringing other things).

Ok we should finally get to work on this, as it was pushed around for the longest time and we haven't really got the time to sit down and seriously discuss and work things out.

Recently there has been an event that generated much interests and kinda kicked started this whole talk again. It was the MAAD @ Red Dot Museum (which I missed, sadly). Though the idea wasn't new for us anymore, I realized there were many artists and creative people amongst our friends and I thought an Art Sale or Auction of such would be good.

Tentative Date for this event is set in May or in June 2008, depending on how fast we can get our ass working on it...

Meanwhile, I call out to all those who have ideas or interest in creating figurines (from clay etc.), hand-made crafts or trinkets, or those who wish to donate your toy collection for charity. Love & Pride Film Festival

Wow! Singapore's first Gay Film Festival! It's about time! Yay! Cheers to Golden Village! Featured Movies are Metrosexual, My Summer of Love, Quinceanera, Spider Lillies, Brokeback Mountain, Eternal Summer, and Poltergay. Well, the selection ain't that great.... er, Poltergay?!!! But nonetheless, for people who have not seen these movies (don't bother with Poltergay... trust me...), should support it!

It's a start and hopefully, it'll grow to be a bigger and better film festival!
