We have shifted to facebook which makes things easier for us logistically. Please look for us at TheBearProject@Facebook

Shout-Outs!

The Bible contains six admonishments to homosexuals and 362 admonishments to heterosexuals. That doesn't mean that God doesn't love heterosexuals. It's just that they need more supervision.

(Closed) TBP's 1st ArchiTours, presented by ArchiFest 2009, 25 October 09, Sunday, 5-9 pm

UPDATES: Please note the details of meeting time & location, don't be late!!!

Date: Sunday, 25 October 2009
Meeting time: 4:45pm (Tour starts at 5pm sharp)
Meeting location: NLB Plaza
Tickets cost: $35 per head

Singapore has some fantastic architectural spaces and every year Architours are conducted to give us a more in depth introduction to what's new and cool in our city. ArchiTours are a celebration and exploration of the city’s best buildings, streets, and spaces. TheBearProject would like to invite you to our new icons of consumption :p ... an architour of iconic designs for surprising and delighting consumers to encourage them to spend! Here's a blurb from the website at: http://www.archifest.sg/index.php/humanity/event/architours_hype_hunt/tour

"The cross into the new millennium saw a huge increase in the popularity of iconic design, as well as a wider recognition of the value of creativity in both economic and human terms. For architects, the embrace of creativity in the city is about more than producing architectural icons. It is also about designing for surprise and delight – creating architecture that brings nourishment to its occupants while also perhaps setting and reflecting trends. In this tour we seek out some places and spaces of retreat, entertainment, and recreation that have delighted their occupants. Though these are manifestations of a society of consumption, they also give something back to the people of the city." - excerpt from ArchiFest 2009 website

Seats are going fast, so I will close this event by 18th October 5pm so please sign up fast for those who are interested. Thanks!

"Women Who Love Women – Conversations in Singapore" is now available Online!

"One of the few documentaries ever made about lesbians in Singapore, this documentary, filmed in 2006 uses interview footage with three Singaporean lesbians -Amanda Lee, Sabrina Renee Chong and Gea Swee Jean, to get a rare glimpse into lesbian lives in Singapore. Intimate and often candid, these lesbians share about their lives and loves and their views on topics such as coming out and relationships. Sometimes heartbreaking, and often times, funny, the documentary captures the lives of lesbians who have chosen to live authentically and is a testament to the courage, tenacity and experiences of lesbians living in Singapore"

Made Singapore history because the film was screened at the Singapore International Film Festival (5 screenings) and Sinema.sg (15 screenings).

Let me do a brief recap of what this event is all about:

TheBearProject Charity Art Show

Having established ourselves as a sub-group of the local gay community, we feel the need to go beyond organizing social-networking activities and give something back to society. Seeing that many of our members are from the creative industries, we’ve decided that our first community charity event will be an auction of artwork created by our members. We hope the event will not just strengthen bonds within the group, but also further promote awareness of social responsibility in the gay community.

TheBearProject Charity Art Show features art pieces by 10 members of our group, comprising cartoons, oil paintings and photographic prints. In addition, we are proud to also feature several prominent local artists at the art auction. Our “Friends of TheBearProject” – including conceptual artists Heman Chong and Felicia Low, visual artists Jeremy Sharma and Genevieve Chua, and photographers Tay Kay Chin and Chan Wai Teik - have kindly donated original works in aid of the auction.

All proceeds from the auction will go to The Triangle Project, a community project run by theatre group The Necessary Stage. The Triangle Project was started in 1992 with the aim of providing opportunities for the less privileged to watch theatre. The scheme has proven to be very successful and previous beneficiaries of scheme include The Tent, Grace Haven, Singapore Cheshire Home, SINDA, Muhamadiyah Welfare Home, the Before and After School Care programmes of Family Service Centres, members of the Society for the Physically Disabled and people with HIV/AIDS. We will also donate some of the funds to other minor beneficiaries anonymously.

(cancelled) Art Walk – June 1st, 1pm onwards

It's cancelled due to poor respone... :(

Hey Guys, it's time for museum hopping to absorb some culture! :p There's quite a few interesting shows at the various museums right now. Here's the few exhibitions I'm suggesting we catch:

@ Singapore Art Museum

Xu Beihong in Nanyang exhibition (5 April – 13 July 08)
Co-organised by the Singapore Art Museum and the Xu Beihong Art Museum (Beijing), Xu Beihong in Nanyang will showcase artworks created in the 1930s and early 1940s, during the artist's sojourn in Southeast Asia and India.

Xu Beihong is recognised as the founder of China’s art education in the realist tradition and the father of Chinese modern painting. He had an immense influence on the development of Chinese painting in the 20th century. As one of the first Chinese painters to study in the West, Xu became a master of both the art of traditional ink painting and western oil painting. Xu spent several years in Southeast Asia and India between 1939 to1941. Besides painting, he also participated in many social activities. He developed close relations with personalities like R. Tagore, M. Gandhi, Sir Thomas Shenton and Lim Bo Seng, and painted compelling portraits of these individuals.

The exhibition will explore Xu’s journey in Southeast Asia and India, and the interactions that went on between artist and the local communities; how each left an indelible mark on the other, and how these helped propelled Xu Beihong's artistic achievement to greater heights.

Seeing. Feeling. Being: Alberto Giacometti exhibition (1 May – 15 Jun 08)
Known for his unique vision and forms of the human figure, Alberto Giacometti has been helmed alongside Picasso and Matisse as masters of European modernism in the history of art. Looking at the gaunt beauty and the brooding isolation of Giacometti’s figures, we can see his frequent investigation of the complexities of the human condition as well as his powerful interpretations and representations in his art-making. The Singapore Art Museum is proud to present Giacometti in Asia, which will showcase Giacometti sculptures, lithographs and rare photographs of Swiss sculptor and painter.

Post Doi-Moi: Vietnamese Art After 1990s exhibition (12 May – 28 Sep 08)
In celebration of 35 years of diplomatic ties between Singapore and Vietnam, the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) will be organising an exhibition on Vietnamese modern and contemporary art. The exhibition aims to raise the level of awareness and appreciation of Vietnamese art among visitors by providing insights into artistic developments that have taken place over the last three decades art. Comprising an exhibition and an international symposium, the event will be further supported by public programmes such as art talks and lectures, workshops and guided tours. In addition, SAM plans to display 15 paintings by Bui Xuan Xuan (1921 - 1988) to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the artist’s death.

@ Peranakan Museum

Junk to Jewels: The Things that Peranakans Value (26 Apr – Aug 08)
Encounter intimate stories and emotions attached to heirlooms treasured by various Peranakan families in this inaugural special exhibition at the new Peranakan Museum.

Guest-curated by Peter Lee, a Peranakan art historian, this special community project brings together loans from over 20 Peranakan families featuring everyday objects to finely crafted works of art. Exhibits include recipe books, wedding shoes from the 1900s and celebrity Peranakan contributions such as Dick Lee's Cultural Medallion. These objects with their personal stories provide a glimpse into the fascinating world of Peranakan culture - past and present. Don’t miss this one!

@ Asian Civilisation Museum, Empress Place

Viet Nam! From Myth to Modernity (21 May – 30 Sep 08)
This exhibition will focus on one of Asia’s fastest growing economies – Vietnam - from its mythical origins to the rising economic power it has become today. Visitors will be able to explore Vietnam's unique cultural identity, as seen in the diverse material cultures that developed over the past 2,500 years. This rich legacy is the result of different cultural influences, which were absorbed and adapted. The advanced bronze technology of the Dong Son culture of northern Vietnam some 2,500 years ago, shared similarities with Chinese traditions and was also exported to other parts of Southeast Asia. The Viet culture of the northern Red River region, was heavily influenced by China during the first 1,000 years of the common era, when the region was under Chinese rule. In central Vietnam, the Hindu Buddhist kingdom of Champa left an important legacy of temples and sculpture, inspired by Indian traditions. In the highlands and other remote areas, tribal communities involved in cross-border trade also engaged in the process of cross-cultural adaptation. Important pieces from national museums around Vietnam, will be exhibited in this exhibition, including archaeological materials, sculpture, textiles and ethnographic objects. Some exhibits will come from private collections and the ACM’s own collection.

Date: June 1st 2008
Time: 1pm
Venue: Singapore Art Museum entrance

Ok hope to see you guys there and get cultured! There's a Kopitiam next to SAM, so people who wanna catch lunch, can meet there at noon, just a suggestion :)

The Wizard of Oz, National Museum, Friday April 25th, 8pm

Sorry it's Friday! My error in the title!

Hey everybody, here's a nice event to gather :) To me, this is one movie all gay men must watch :p hahaha... So do catch it if you have not!

Under the Banyan Tree:

Open-Air Cinema - Wizard of Oz

Back for the month of April is this series of open-air free screenings held outside the main entrance of the National Museum under a banyan tree; you can’t miss it. Two of our favourite movie classics are ripe for the picking.

Like Chaplin’s
The Kid or E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Wizard of Oz simply lays bare primal emotions, exposes our childhood anxieties about abandonment and powerlessness, and brings to light the tension between the repressive comforts of home and the liberating yet terrifying unknown marking all our adult lives.

Dir: Victor Fleming. 1939. USA. 101 mins. PG. Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr

Admission price: FREE
Date: Fri Apr 25
Open times: 8pm

check out this interesting site about this movie, particularly this portion:
" In
Making Things Perfectly Queer: Interpreting Mass Culture, Alexander Doty interprets Dorothy's journey as a young lesbian's search for identity. The female characters she encounters represent the extremes of identity, with Auntie Em and Glinda representing the traditional and the feminine, while Almira Gulch and the Wicked Witch of the West represent the butch. The Wizard of Oz has particular significance for the gay and lesbian community. The rainbow flag was first used in the 1978 San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day Parade. The rainbow flag has connotations of diversity and multicuilturalism, but perhaps the most important association with this symbol is with Judy Garland, who sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" in The Wizard of Oz and has become such an icon for the gay community."

Hope to see you there :)

A Trip to Singapore Art Museum - Primary Colours: Feng Zhengjie, 15th Mar 08

Primary Colours: Feng Zhengjie

This exhibition extends from 29 January 2008 to 20 April 2008.

Here is an excerpt from Singapore Art Museum's website about art of Feng Zhengjie:

"If the eyes are the windows to one's soul, then the art of Feng Zhengjie can be said to reveal as much as they conceal, the psyche of the self, in contemporary society. A renowned artist in the contemporary Chinese art scene, the works of Feng Zhengjie examine consumer society while engaging with a spectrum of folk art motifs and popular culture as a response to the new issues that are confronting China. This exhibition includes a special focus on his recent works of women portraits which the artist is known for. Charming, capricious and contradictory, Feng Zhengjie’s women present an ambivalent answer to the question of nature and artifice that continues to captivate. At the same time, Primary Colours is an invitation to discover the different shades of meaning in Feng’s art." - taken from Singapore Art Museum website

Venue: Singapore Art Museum, 71 Bras Basah Road

Bharatanatyam, Victoria Theatre, 29th Mar 08

XiaoYao, our resident member will be performing a classical south indian dance Bharatanatyam at Victoria Theatre on the 29th March. Here is what he has to say!

"Hi guys, as you may have heard already, I'll be performing Bharatanatyam at the Victoria Theatre on 29 Mar at 7 pm. Bharatanatyam, in case you're wondering, is a form of classical South Indian dance that depicts the mystic manifestation of the metaphysical element of fire in the human body (no, I won't be running around coconut trees like they do in those Bollywood movies  ). I'll be performing an item dedicated to Lord Ganesha (you know, that one with the elephant head) with the rest of my class. If you're interested in catching my performance (that is, if my big tummy doesn't scare you away :P), tickets are at $10 each. Seats are extremely limited, thanks to the kiasu parents of the Indian girls also performing, so please let me know whether you want to come or not by Fri, 29 Feb. No, no matter what VitalAuto says, I'm still not going in drag to perform." - XiaoYao

Date: 29th March 08 (Saturday)

Time: 7pm

Venue: Victoria Theatre

Ticket Price: $10 each

Here's a URL of a clip from YouTube showing how this dance looks like... (You can imagine him with his ankle-bells and bouncing tummy  No offense...)

TheBearProject's Charity Event - The Discussion Continues

...and so we sat down one fine day for a serious discussion of this event (Finally) and we got stuck at the targeted beneficiaries part... which we thought it is only fair that we leave this issue open to you guys! The idea of this event is to raise funds/money for a specific beneficiary. Our targeted beneficiary will not necessarily be a PLU/Gay cause like A.F.A., rather we are opening up our options to reach out to even old folks homes or orphanages (& of course SPCA which... *ahem* is for animals...)

By that, we will raise our funds through an Art Sale. It will be somewhat similar to a "Bake sale" of sorts, only that the art pieces (or crafts) will be displayed/exhibited with a minimum price and those who are interested will have to bid to top the existing prices, so on & so forth.

As for the art pieces, we have come up with a list of people who can contribute their creations. Those who have your artistic talents hidden away from the face of the earth, this is your chance to step forth and contribute something! Examples of art pieces you can contribute are handicrafts, clay figurines, photography (framed), paintings (oil, acrylic, collages etc all framed), digital graphic collages etc etc and the list is endless! USE YOUR IMAGINATION... and see how creative you can go! (I will sent aside another separate post for this)

There will be a panel of Art "curators" which will then decide on which pieces will go for the auction, which pieces won't and how much the minimum bid for the particular piece will be. Those pieces not sold (or didn't make it through the selection process) will then be put on eBay to be sold off. The money will still be sent to the designated beneficiary.

What we will need from you now will be your inputs on which beneficiaries the collected funds will go to. Feel free to comment below in the comment box.

Please state:

- Name of Beneficiary (eg. Ren Ci Hospital & Medicare Center etc.)

- Reasons why we should donate the money to them. (It can be any reason, like because you have volunteered there before and you noticed their lack of funds and donation from the public or you simply like them)

From the inputs we get from all of you guys, the committee will then limit down to one beneficiary that will receive the money. But of course, there will be some research and advising involved to determine which one. Till we can get down to work on the art projects, we must get this out of the way first or at least keep the ball rolling. Once again I must say your inputs will be valued and appreciated.

Thank you very much!

TheBearProject's Charity Event - The Discussion Continues

TBP's Charity Committee:
  • Asimov_22
  • VitalAuto
  • Universek
  • Balenciaga
  • Odac
  • Stonedwin
  • Martinn
Tentatively this is the main committee. Those who wish to help can let me or VitalAuto know personally or email to thebearproject@gmail.com, either way. (Erm, thae order of the names you see above has no hierarchical meaning.)

Committee members, I'll be organizing a meeting very soon. Somewhere in the week of 17th Feb onwards. Will email you guys for the details!

Ok we should finally get to work on this, as it was pushed around for the longest time and we haven't really got the time to sit down and seriously discuss and work things out.

Recently there has been an event that generated much interests and kinda kicked started this whole talk again. It was the MAAD @ Red Dot Museum (which I missed, sadly). Though the idea wasn't new for us anymore, I realized there were many artists and creative people amongst our friends and I thought an Art Sale or Auction of such would be good.

Tentative Date for this event is set in May or in June 2008, depending on how fast we can get our ass working on it...

Meanwhile, I call out to all those who have ideas or interest in creating figurines (from clay etc.), hand-made crafts or trinkets, or those who wish to donate your toy collection for charity. Of course if you have any other good ideas and want to share with us, please post your comments or email us.

Market of Artists & Designers (MAAD)

Hey guys, this weekend, MAAD is back at the Red Dot Design Museum. It's a market for original creative works, serve as an platform for budding artists and designers to test and sell their creative works.

Check out their website for more information of the event.

Since we are planning our own art auction drive, this would be a good event to check out and see what's out there :) Plus our beloved Ngarte will be 'selling' heads at a friend's stall (website)... so think it would be a good event to attend for people who are interested in art and design. Also maybe to grab something beautiful for Valentine's Day for your love ones.

A group of us are planning to visit, so do join us, let's just meet at the location itself.
Date: 3rd February 2008, Sunday
Venue: Red Dot Design Museum (general info)
Time: 2pm

Hope to see you guys, come and join us and support our local artists and designers!
