Shout-Outs!

"What is straight? A line can be straight, or a street, but the human heart, oh, no, it's curved like a road through mountains."
-
Tennessee Williams, A Streetcar Named Desire, 1947

"Despite this, community groups such as People Like Us, Pelangi Pride Centre, TheBearProject, ADLUS, Sayoni, Oogachaga, 5 Degrees, Women’s Nite, SGButterfly, Singapore Queer Straight Alliance, Short Circuit, Young Out There, and others had a banner year of activities, testament to their resilience. (CLOSED)TheBearProject's 3rd Anniversary Party, 18th July 2009

MORE UPDATES!

Good news!!! There will be a lucky draw with some nice prizes and also a "BEST DRESSED" award to be given out! So for those who are coming, please dress to impress ok???

Dear friends of TheBearProject,

I would like to thank all those who attended last year's anniversary party at Play Club in Tanjong Pagar. It was because of your participation that we were extremely successful for the party and not to mention the ton of fun doing it. In July, we will yet again celebrate our 3rd Anniversary! How time flies! Like all parties, we will have a theme and for this year our theme is "BACK TO THE 80's!"

I kinda got inspired by Aqua's Song, watch this:

So... what else? Dress your best to impress with 80's outfits! i.e big hair (if you have enough), tight or bell-bottomed jeans, tight t-shirts, head bands, shoulder pads, Lycra tights, polka dotted shirts, overalls, or those half-cut gloves worn by George Michael??? Whatever 80's fashion trends you can think of, be creative! (For those born in the 80s, probably its time to do some research...)

For this year's party, we decided to play it down a bit by making it a more intimate experience for all and that is why we are having it at the Aranda Country Club.

Below are the details:

Date: 18th July 2009, Saturday
Venue: Aranda Country Club, 60 Pasir Ris Drive 3, Room no. 2211
Time: 5:30pm
Theme/Dress code: BACK TO THE 80'S!
Price per head: $35

For those who happen to have left-over liquor at home, like wines or spirits that you do not want to drink anymore, we would like you to contribute them to the party. What's called a party without alcohol?!?! But of cos, make sure they're still drinkable ok?

Last but not least, the closing date for RSVP & Payment will be on 4th July 09, Saturday. So RSVP early!

Looking forward to seeing you guys again! Till then, take care.

sincerest regards,
asimov_22

TBP Healthy Sunday – HSBC Tree Top Walk @ MacRitchie Reservoir Park, 28 June '09

Dear All,

I sincerely thank you, friends and loved ones, for a really great time on Sunday morning. Beautiful-macho-funshine bears, comfortable surroundings, excellent weather and a peaceful environment had brought us joy and laughter.
Thank you for sharing all the sweet moments today. See you again at TheBearProject Anniversary chalet next month on 18/7/09.

With love always,
martinn

It's time for the bears to connect with mother nature again!

The HSBC TreeTop Walk (HSBC TTW) is the highlight of several long hiking routes in MacRitchie that brings you through different stages of mature secondary forest. The first of its kind in Singapore and in the region, this free-standing suspension bridge connects the two highest points (Bukit Peirce and Bukit Kalang) in MacRitchie and offers a bird's eye view of the community of plants and animals that live in the forest canopy. The total length of the walkway is about 250m and its height from the forest floor varies, with the highest point at 25m.

Come frolic with me, Martinn, and other wonderful creatures from the wild, as we take in the sights and the fresh air!

The distance to the entrance of the TreeTop Walk is approximately 4.5 km (1.5 - 2 hour walk) from the MacRitchie Reservoir Park and 2.5 km (45 mins - 1 hr walk) from the carpark at Venus Drive. Therefore, a round trip including the TreeTop Walk is about 7 to 10 km (3-5 hours depending on your walking pace).

Date: 28th June 2009 (Sunday)
Time: 10:00am
Meeting point: MacRitchie Reservoir Park Carpark @ Venus Drive (off Upper Thomson Road)

*We will commence the walk at 10:30am sharp.
But no one likes to wait so let’s be early as we walk together hand-in-hand…

It's gonna be hot, so wear caps, sunblock, and bring enough water! I'll be bringing my brolly! ;)

Always fabulous,
Martinn

TheBearProject Charity Art Show 2009

The Bear Project Charity Art Show started out as an idea for the group’s first community charity project back in early 2008. Having established itself as a sub-group of the local gay community, TBP members felt the need to go beyond organizing social-networking activities and give something back to society. Seeing that many of its members are from the creative industries, TBP decided on an auction of artwork created by its members. It hoped that the event would not just strengthen bonds within the group, but also promote awareness of social responsibility in the gay community.

The first Charity Art Show was successfully held on 16 August, 2008 at Play in Tanjong Pagar. Part of the 2008 Indignation Festival, it featured art pieces by 10 members of our group, comprising cartoons, oil paintings and photographic prints. But TBP was also most privileged to secure donated artwork from several prominent local artists. These “Friends of TheBearProject” included charcoal artist Jimmy Ong, conceptual artists Heman Chong and Felicia Low, visual artists Jeremy Sharma and Genevieve Chua, as well as photographers Tay Kay Chin and Chan Wai Teik. The event was attended by about 100 people and raised over $6,000. Half the proceeds went to Necessary Stage's The Triangle Project and the other half was equally divided and donated anonymously to The Straits Times-School Pocket Money Fund and Assisi Hospice.

Following on the success of last year’s event, TBP is holding its second Charity Art Auction, as part of the 2009 Indignation Festival (August 2009). This year’s event will see more wider community participation from the gay community, as the group intends to invite other gay groups in Singapore to submit art pieces from their members for auction at the event. The show and its art pieces will revolve around the theme of Superheroes, a reference to an idea very much alive in pop culture today, as well as an allegory to the many issues of diversity, discrimination and acceptance that many gay people in Singapore grapple with daily.

And we want you to contribute! Send us your idea/proposals to thebearproject.charity@gmail.com and we will get back to you soon!

Hi Everyone,

I would like to thank everyone who attended the June movie/ dinner outing. Your presence has made this lous... ermm... i mean 'not so great' movie so much more enjoyable!!!! :P

Though the movie wasn't the best, i'm sure the dinner more than made up for it... Maybe we SHOULD have watched Hannah Montana instead right??? ;)

So thank you everyone, i hope you guys have as much fun as i did...

************************************************************************

Dear All,

I would like to begin by apologizing to those who are attending both movies on Saturday. Regrettably, we have to cancel the 2nd show - UP as the release date has been postponed from 4th June to 3rd September (as per Cathay website). In addition, Blood The Last Vampire will be changed to the 5.40pm show in a nicer, bigger theater and with a better timing.

After the movie, I would like to propose that we go for dinner at Shokudo, The Heeren. (Other suggestions are most welcomed)

Please accept my sincere apologies for any inconveniences caused. See you on Saturday 5.20pm @ Cineleisure Orchard.

Love,
Martinn

Blood The Last Vampire
Synopsis
On the surface, Saya is a stunning 16-year old girl, but that youthful exterior hides the tormented soul of a 400 year-old “halfling”.

Born to a human father and a vampire mother, she has for centuries been a loner, obsessed with using her samurai skills to rid the world of vampires, all the while knowing that she herself can survive only on blood like those she hunts. When she is sent onto an American military base in Tokyo by the clandestine organization she works for, Saya immediately senses that this may be her opportunity to finally destroy Onigen, the evil patriarch of all vampires. Using her superhuman strength and her sword, she begins to rid the base of its evil infestation in a series of spectacular and elaborate showdowns. However, it is not until she forms her first human friendship in centuries with the young daughter of the base’s general that Saya learns her greatest power over Onigen may well be her ability for human connection…

Renowned producers Bill Kong (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Hero) and Abel Nahmias (11 Commandments, La Beuze) team up with director Chris Nahon (Kiss of the Dragon) on this English language vampire slaying adventure, where the hope of the world rests on a beautiful young woman.

TOP GIRLS, Gala Evening: Fund-Raiser for AWARE, 30 May 2009

AWARE is raising funds by having a Gala evening of TOP GIRLS, scheduled for Saturday, 30 May. It will be a great opportunity to put aside more weighty issues and celebrate life and renewal together.

The Caryl Churchill play is among the best 100 plays of the 20th Century on the British National Theatre’s Millennium list. It won the Obie Award in 1983. The Wessex Theatre production is directed by Daniel Toyne, and has a seven member all woman cast playing 16 roles in all! The play has some coarse language but promises an evening of heart-warming truths, and laughter.

Synopsis
A classic of feminist literature, Top Girls opens in a restaurant where Marlene is hosting a dinner party for five friends. The five female guests are all either long-dead or fictional characters from literature or paintings. As the play develops we see other aspects of Marlene’s life; a hard-bitten career woman employed at the 'Top Girls' employment agency, her interactions with colleagues, clients and with the family she left behind. The narrative and themes of this play focus on the various roles of women in society and relationships.

Presented in association with AWARE - Singapore’s leading advocacy group dedicated to promoting gender equality.

It is being staged from 27th May to 30th May. Tickets for the Gala Night on 30th May are at $80 each. This comes with an invite to a reception brought to us by Harry’s and WineGuru. Do support this great cause!

Please call AWARE Centre 6779 7137 or email tickets@aware.org.sg for more information as well as buy tickets.
