A Desperate Plea For Help - Noah's Ark Cares

A friend informed us that one of our beneficiaries from our last charity art show requested for support from the public in regards to this unique case of a 72 year old lady who's been living alone with many other strays she had taken in for the past few years. For the whole story, please visit Noah's Ark Cares blog by clicking on the title itself.

We urge those animal lovers, especially those who continues to support SPCA by sending them money & such, to redirect their financial support towards Noah's Ark Cares. They provide these strays with proper vaccination, food, water and most importantly, a home to stay. So once again I urge all of you SPCA supporters, its time to open up your eyes & look at the big picture.

The Best Tunes/Remixes/Albums of 2008

A few of us in facebook have been compiling our top ten tunes/albums for the year 2008, and we thought would be fun to post them up and maybe to encourage others to talk about theirs. So do drop us your comments and tell us your top ten favourite tunes/remixes/albums!

I'll start, here's My Top 10 tunes of 2008 - (not in any particular order):

01 Stepping Stone . Duffy
(my fave track from the album, Rockferry period! And since Rockferry is my fave album of the year, guess this would be the best song of 2008 for me! Maybe it's the lyrics that hit a nerve or her passionate voice, it brought tears to my eyes the first time i heard this.)

02 Black and Gold . Sam Sparro
(This one is totally addictive! I couldn't stop tapping my feet everytime i hear this! Love the soulful voice!)

03 Blind . Hercules And Love Affair
(enough said abt this... was so good, i did a review earlier on this site!)

04 Green Light/Rope Of Sand . Jamie Lidell
(from one of my fave albums of 2008, can't decide which i like most :) On Greenlight, he sounded like what Sam Cooke would sound like in 2008, pure brilliance! And i love the lyrics of Rope of Sand, a haunting ballad, "So much I don't understand, but one thing I know, every day is a rope of sand, we should be learning to let it go.")

05 Out At The Pictures . Hot Chip
(opening track of their "Made In The Dark" album. It's a madcap, totally delicious & infectious offbeat piece of electro pop. It's New Order going a bit nutty!)

06 Piece Of Me . Britney Spears
(Other than Toxic, I think this is Ms Spears' best song ever! "Blackout" is also her best album ever. Too bad both the song and album were greatly ignored. Actually another track Radar is just as good...)

07 Make You Feel My Love . Adele
(Chills down my spine the first time i heard this. Just a soulful love ballad beautifully sung. At 19, she actually sounded like she has years of experience in love! It's the kind of songs i wish someone would make a love tape with, hahaha)

08 On My Shoulders . The Do
(Think pop-rock sound of The Cardigans meets offbeat creativity of Bjork, that's how i would describe this. Stumble upon them while reading some music magazine, was intrigued and downloaded the whole album. One of my best finds this year. Just love her warbling voice, it's fresh, moving and quirky all at the same time.)

09 Cobrastyle . Robyn
(I was hooked the moment she went "I press trigger, i don't press people's button"... There's so many great tracks on her self-titled album with tracks produced and written by The Knife (Who's That Girl) and the song that brought my attention to Robyn, Konichiwa Bitches. But this is my fave track. It's a 2006 track by Teddybears, a punk rock /ska track. Her version is catchy, fast and totally fun! It's for me the ultimate pop song this year!)

10 Because . Madita
(I have been trying to download her album "Too" :p But only managed to get this song! hahaha, but it's ok cos it's one of my most played songs this year on my ipod. She sounds like Fiona Apple went jazzy. It's the song to play whenever i'm down. Totally perk me up!

Hear from you guys! Vitalauto

(Closed)"Pre" X'mas Pot-luck Picnic @ Sentosa Siloso Beach, 20th Dec '08

Thank you to all of you guys who turned up and brought us those delicious goodies and munchies and what not! It was certainly difficult to wake up so early running to Tiong Bahru to get their famous char-siew paos and then rush to VivoCity so early in the day. I wanna thank you all for that! Oh also, thank the gods it didn't pour today! :)

Sorry to inform all that Siloso Beach is 1/2 closed due to their preparations for New Year's Party. Therefore, we will move to Palawan Beach instead! I have sent all of those who are going an email, please check! We will still be meeting at the same time & place, just the destination is changed.

I think the last time we tried to organize a Sentosa outing, it got canceled due to the Pink Picnic, Indignation 2007... Anyways, this time round we're going there for a fabulicious picnic under the sun, amidst the sandy shores, the gentle winds and not forgetting the *gulp* "sights"...

We will be spending the mid-morning till the evening when the sun sets, please feel free to bring along your personal stereos, swimming trunks & costumes, suntan lotions, frisbees... Does anyone have a volleyball???

Oh oh oh and most importantly, we need to hammer out who is going to bring what kind of food for the pot-luck picnic too. Typical examples would be sandwiches, fish fingers, chicken wings, pastries, pies, Kebabs etc. (U get my drift... something light yet sustainable :)

So for those who are confirmed going, I will put their names down and what food they would like to bring. I will need volunteers to help bring drinks, especially those who drives a car. Here are a list of things that I need volunteering:
  1. Driver/s - Transport for drinks, icebox etc. (1 will do) -> 2xist_Thong
  2. Picnic mats (Depending on how many will be going, I suppose... 5 mats?) Currently only have 2
  3. Paper plates/cups/serviettes -> Asimov_22
The post will close on 18th Dec, so please sign up early. Looking forward to seeing you guys again!

A big thank you to those who have already sent us their entries, we have decided to extend the deadline to a later date next year as we know almost everybody are zooming in and out of the country especially when it comes to the end of the year, or simply being occupied with Christmas and what not...

New deadline is on: 11th January 2009, Sunday

Currently we already received 6 stories from participants! Please send us your stories soon cos' the deadline is coming up! Thank you to those who participated! Its been a really exciting experience reading your stories :)

Greetings fellow bears, bear-hunters and friends!

We will be holding a story-writing competition in association with TengaTango's Tenga - the new adult novelty concept specifically for men! For those who've been to Taipei or Tokyo, I'm very sure you have heard of this product. For those who don't, please go take a look at their website -> here. You can create fictitious characters, scenarios or even relate a real story. Most importantly be creative and don't forget to include a sex toy!!! Winners will be picked by our committee according to how well the story is written, how creative it is and how sexy it is! We will be putting up 6 finalists' stories (depending on the number of entries) for public voting on the blog and the committee will have the final say, taking into account the votes cast.

Submission Details:
1. Please email your entries to thebearproject@gmail.com
2. Have your email titled as "Story writing competition", easier for us to differentiate.
3. Include your name (nickname is fine), contact number & email address

(Closed)Trail Walk @ The Southern Ridges, Sunday 30 November '08, 8.30am

Thanks to VitalAuto who organized this trail walk! Honestly, I didn't expect it to be this... erm, tiring. Well blame it on my physical condition! Anyways, it was quite fun exploring the nature parks with friends and very soon hopefully, we'll have the Pulau Ubin cycling trip sometime soon next year! - Asimov_22

Note: Change in Venue to meet!
We have decided to meet at VivoCity Interchange (opposite VivoCity, can have breakfast first at hawker centre). We'll be walking the other way around, starting from VivoCity. Sorry for the last minute change cos after discussing with Xiaoyao who has done the walk, it's easier to start at VivoCity and walk from there, he'll be our guide :) It's also an easier location to meet up. Please do help to inform your fellow friends who are joining us for the walk! Thanks!

It's been months since our last outdoor events (Paintball Warfare & Pulau Ubin)! I thought we should all checkout The Southern Ridges Trail Walk.

The 9km chain of green spaces spans across Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, Kent Ridge Park and ends at West Coast Park, each seamlessly linked by foot trails and connection bridges.

For our trail walk, the journey starts at VivoCity where we will gather.

For this walk, we will cover:
Canopy Walk
HortPark

Telok Blangah Hill Park

Alexandra Arch

Henderson Waves

Mount Faber Park

and the trip will end in Kent Ridge Park where we will head to somewhere (suggestions?) for a nice lunch :)

Here's pictures from someone's flickr site to give you an idea what this trail walk covers.
Kent Ridge Park to HortPark
HortPark to Telok Blangah Hill Park via Alexandra Arch
Telok Blangah Hill Park to Mount Faber Park via Henderson Waves
Mount Faber Park to Harbourfront MRT

So hope to see many of you there at the trail walk :) I know it's early, but hey, it's just one sunday! :p It's fresh air, exercise and beautiful sites!

Date: 30 November, Sunday
Time: 8.30am
Venue to meet: Interchange opposite VivoCity

See you guys soon!
Vitalauto

note:
Don't be late! It gets really hot, really fast. So we should start early while it’s a little cooler. From different sites I've read, it takes about four hours to complete the whole walk at a moderate pace. More if you want to take in the sights.

Please bring: lots of water, snacks, sunblock, a cap. Wear good walking shoes and clothes you can perspire in.

However, recruiting the band members proves to be difficult a task as the search for the famous seven samurai. Still, seven ordinary Hengchun residents end up forming the band. One day, Aga receives a parcel from Japan not meant for him – in fact, it was to have been delivered at Cape No.7., an address that doesn’t exist anymore… But even though he cannot find the address, Aga doesn’t return the parcel to Japan. Rather, he opens it to find love letters written some 60 years ago by a Japanese teacher and addressed to a Taiwanese girl he was deeply in love with, but had to leave behind Taiwan. During the process of putting the band together, Aga and Tomoko are constantly at odds with each other, but thanks to the love letters, their conflict-ridden relationship slowly turns into love. And even though they eventually find the lady the parcel was meant for, it seems that Aga and Tomoko are destined to follow the same footsteps as the girl and the teacher in their own love story… Tomoko must now decide whether she will stay together with Aga or go back to Japan alone.

synopsis:
A group of self-absorbed actors set out to make the most expensive war film. But after ballooning costs force the studio to cancel the movie, the frustrated director refuses to stop shooting, leading his cast into the jungles of Southeast Asia, where they encounter real bad guys.

"Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlet Johansson) visit Barcelona for their summer, staying with Vicky's distant relative Judy (Patricia Clarkson) and her husband, Mark Nash (Kevin Dunn). A Narrator (voice of Christopher Evan Welch), present throughout the film, describes the two friends: Vicky is practical and traditional in her approach to love and commitment, and is engaged to the reliable but unromantic Doug (Chris Messina). She is in Barcelona getting her masters in Catalan Identity, a project spawned by her love of the works of Gaudí, and is emotionally moved by Spanish guitar. Cristina, on the other hand, is spontaneous and unsure of what she wants in life. She is just out of a relationship and wants to get over the bad time she had making a 12-minute film about Love." - Synopsis Taken from IMDB

"One of the few documentaries ever made about lesbians in Singapore, this documentary, filmed in 2006 uses interview footage with three Singaporean lesbians -Amanda Lee, Sabrina Renee Chong and Gea Swee Jean, to get a rare glimpse into lesbian lives in Singapore. Intimate and often candid, these lesbians share about their lives and loves and their views on topics such as coming out and relationships. Sometimes heartbreaking, and often times, funny, the documentary captures the lives of lesbians who have chosen to live authentically and is a testament to the courage, tenacity and experiences of lesbians living in Singapore"

(Closed) Yoga Lesson for TheBearProject Members - by Leonic Yoga

Post is closed, enjoy your yoga session guys! For those who missed this opportunity, please visit leonicyoga.blogspot.com for more information. Hello friends! Good news for those avid yoga practitioners, fellow bears who are into yoga and yoga-curious people! A good friend of ours, Leonard Se (from Leonic Yoga) had approached me & VitalAuto to offer his yoga services and his extensive yoga knowledge exclusively for us!

Here is an excerpt taken from his blog, leonicyoga.blogspot.com which i found it inspiring:

"As Yoga totally embraces our mind, body & spirit, regular practice can help change a negative mindset by offering inner peace and an ability to face upheavals and deal with problems. The benefits of yoga seem to be endless. It is perfectly adaptable to all kinds of lifestyles – Eastern, Western, children and adults. It can replace the so-called buzzes of alcohol, caffeine, nicotine and other stimulants with a wonderful sense of energy release. Practicing Yoga has helped me to quit smoking, a habit I’ve had for 28 years. It is a fabulous way to tone and strengthen our bodies and relax our mind."

By working with Leonard on this, we are glad to announce that he will be conducting this first lesson as a complimentary lesson only for TBP members. He will be conducting Hatha Yoga as an introductory lesson for us. Below are the details:

Venue: 11 Haji Lane
Date: 30th Sept 08, Tuesday
Time: 8pm

Closing date for RSVP will be on 26th Sept, Friday. Therefore, please RSVP early!!! For more information about Leonic Yoga, please visit http://leonicyoga.blogspot.com

"Bear-y gay" - Article from Fridae.com, by David Cheong

Bear-y gay
By David Cheong

Bears, musclebears, G-men... the lines seem to be blurring in Singapore and elsewhere in Asia as the subculture becomes increasingly visible. David Cheong highlights TheBearProject Charity Art Show to be held this Saturday and gives readers an introduction to this group of heavy-set men.

One of my British friends always has the same argument with me. “You can think what you want, but there is no way that you guys can be called bears,” he says hotly. “Bears are big and hairy gay men. If you’re not hairy, you’re not a bear.” I always have the same retort. To say that smooth, hairless Asians can’t be bears is to subscribe to some sort of Western imperialist ideal. Yes, the bear subculture that turned its back on the smooth, lean and urban gay stereotype did originate in the US and has become extremely popular in certain parts of Europe, but it doesn’t mean that the concept of a gay bear is exclusively Western and can’t be re-interpreted in another part of the world.

articlepic
From the top: G-Men magazine, one of the top-selling bear/G-men-related magazines in Asia; artworks from the TheBearProject Charity Art Show: One Leg Up (charcoal on paper) by well known New York-based Singapore artist Jimmy Ong, Stuck in Ecstasy (acrylic on canvas) by Brian Ho and Hong Kong #64 (photographic print with frame) by Kay Chin.
As a matter of fact it already has, whether Western purists approve or not. In Asia, monthly Japanese magazine G-Men was the first to idolise the stocky, ultra-masculine gay Asian man sporting a crewcut and goatee. Since then, the “G-Man” look has been highly sought-after and copied by thousands of young gay men in countries like Taiwan and Hong Kong. And just like in the West, these burly, powerful and often fat guys (so far removed from the Western stereotype of the beautiful, slim gay Asian boy) also quickly became known as “bears.”

Today, Asian bear culture is thriving not just in Japan but within little bear communities established in Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. In Taiwan, the unofficial Asian “bear capital,” the bear stereotype has even gained enough mass acceptance to emerge as a mainstream gay look. Rambunctious and physical (think knee-length shorts, chunky shoes and lots of hugging), Asian bears maintain a fairly tight regional network - getting to know each other on the Internet and making it a point to visit each other when they go travelling. They hang out in dedicated bear saunas, or gulp down drinks over Chinese karaoke in bear bars like New Wally Matt and Red Point Café in Hong Kong, Same and the now-defunct Oso in Singapore and the Bearbie Bar in Bangkok. There’s even a “Little Bear Village” near Ximending in Taipei and “bear parties” in Taipei and Hong Kong.

Back in Singapore, bear culture is still nascent - hampered somewhat by persistent prejudices against heavier-set gay men whose bodies don’t conform to the tanned, V-shaped ideal. But Singapore bears are growing in confidence and making their presence felt with the formation of Singapore’s first bear community group TheBearProject (TBP).

“I started the group partly because I wanted to dispel the notion that fatter guys had low self-esteem and didn’t like going out and having fun,” says 27-year-old Ernest Yeo, who founded TBP with fellow bear Gary Lim.

“Actually, a lot of us already knew each other, so I thought why not organise activities like going to the movies or playing badminton so that we can get together on a regular basis?” The group now boasts about 120 members and it recently celebrated its first anniversary with a raucous party at Play, a dance club. According to its founders, TBP is inclusive, meaning that you do not need to be a bear to join. But assimilation is decidedly smoother if you already have the required physique. And if you’re a musclebear, you’re definitely an A-lister!

Last year, TheBearProject made its debut when about 20 of its members turned up for The Pink Picnic at the Botanic Gardens. This year, the group decided to organise an event on its own for the Indignation festival. “We thought that since quite a few of us were in the creative industries, why not organise a little art show of our own works, and auction them off to our members for charity?” says Ernest. “It would make a nice change from the usual movie outings and social get-togethers and also be a chance to do something for our community. And I guess there’s a wackiness to the idea of big heavy guys peddling fine art.”

The result is TheBearProject Charity Art Show, featuring almost 20 works from TBP members and guest artists that the organisers know personally. Open to the wider gay community in Singapore, the works will be exhibited on August 16 at Play and auctioned off for charity the same night. In addition to artwork by 10 TBP members, there are contributions from noted lesbian artists Genevieve Chua and Felicia Low, concept artist Heman Chong, painter Jeremy Sharma and photographers Tay Kay Chin and Chan Wai Teik. Proceeds will be donated to The Triangle Project, a charity initiative of The Necessary Stage that provides opportunities for the less privileged to watch theatre, as well as a number of other charities.

“It’s one of the last events on the Indignation calendar and we hope everyone can come down to see the works and support a good cause,” says Ernest. “It’s being held in a club, which is not a typical art venue, but that gives the show quite a cool, underground feel.”

Looking ahead, TheBearProject’s founders say they want to grow the group even more and help get its members more involved in the activities of the wider gay community. “A bunch of us helped the Pelangi Pride Centre move to Little India. We enjoyed ourselves and I think they appreciated the extra muscle power!” TBP also hopes to link up with similar bear groups in Hong Kong and Taiwan for more regional events. Bear Olympics, anyone?

You can find out more out TheBearProject at its website http://www.thebearproject.com.

TheBearProject Charity Art Show will be held on Aug 16 at Play on Tanjong Pagar Road, from 8pm to 9.30pm. This is a private event, so you will need to RSVP at thebearproject.charity@gmail.com to attend. All the works can be viewed online in advance of the event at http://thebearprojectcharityartshow.blogspot.com.

Let me do a brief recap of what this event is all about:

TheBearProject Charity Art Show

Having established ourselves as a sub-group of the local gay community, we feel the need to go beyond organizing social-networking activities and give something back to society. Seeing that many of our members are from the creative industries, we’ve decided that our first community charity event will be an auction of artwork created by our members. We hope the event will not just strengthen bonds within the group, but also further promote awareness of social responsibility in the gay community.

TheBearProject Charity Art Show features art pieces by 10 members of our group, comprising cartoons, oil paintings and photographic prints. In addition, we are proud to also feature several prominent local artists at the art auction. Our “Friends of TheBearProject” – including conceptual artists Heman Chong and Felicia Low, visual artists Jeremy Sharma and Genevieve Chua, and photographers Tay Kay Chin and Chan Wai Teik - have kindly donated original works in aid of the auction.

All proceeds from the auction will go to The Triangle Project, a community project run by theatre group The Necessary Stage. The Triangle Project was started in 1992 with the aim of providing opportunities for the less privileged to watch theatre. The scheme has proven to be very successful and previous beneficiaries of scheme include The Tent, Grace Haven, Singapore Cheshire Home, SINDA, Muhamadiyah Welfare Home, the Before and After School Care programmes of Family Service Centres, members of the Society for the Physically Disabled and people with HIV/AIDS. We will also donate some of the funds to other minor beneficiaries anonymously.

Fridae.com News: Movie fundraiser raises $10,000 for Singapore’s Pride Season in August

Excerpt from Fridae.com:

June 19, 2008

Singapore’s 4th annual Pride Season is here again with talks and forums, art and literature, as well as social and outdoor events.

A movie fundraiser and Singapore premiere of the film Wilde, which was held on May 13, had raised S$10,000 for Indignation, the city-state's annual Pride Season.

The film depicted the life story of playwright and poet Oscar Wilde who is today widely celebrated as an artist persecuted for his homosexuality. He was found guilty of "gross indecency” and sentenced to two years' imprisonment with hard labour in 1895. Singapore's Section 377A, which continues to outlaw sexual relations between men up to this day, is descended from this law.

The $10,000 will be used to help fund selected events held during the festival to be held in August as all Indignation events are open to the public and are usually free of charge (unless otherwise stated), in order to be accessible to everyone.

(Top of page: Almost 500 people attended the fundraiser and Singapore premiere of Wilde which was banned by the Singapore Board of Film censors when it was first released in 1997.)

Unexpectedly chosen to fulfill an ancient prophecy, Po's dreams become reality when he joins the world of Kung Fu and studies alongside his idols, the legendary Furious Five -- Tigress, Crane, Mantis, Viper and Monkey -- under the leadership of their guru, Master Shifu. A Note To Share From Action For Aids

This information was relayed to me by SaltWetFish from TBP. We feel that this message from A.F.A. is important, especially crucial to partners, friends and family who are sexually active. This is just a reminder to all that the very least we can do is to be responsible to ourselves and our love ones, by USING PROTECTION at all times.

The Message from A.F.A.

*Community Announcement from Action for AIDS*

Dear members of the Singaporean Gay community

Action for AIDS received an email last week about a possible case of
infringement of the Infectious Diseases Act (IDA). The complainant emailed
to AfA and the Singapore Police Force, stating that he is able to provide
pictures and contact number of the accused. (See email below)

We are unable to ascertain the facts of this case at this point of time.

However we would like to highlight this incident and for you to consider the
following -

· Under the IDA anyone who knows that he has HIV, or has reason to
believe that he has been exposed to HIV, should inform his sex partners
before engaging in any sexual activities, and that there might be a risk of
contracting HIV from him. Failure to do so can result in criminal charges.

· Unprotected anal sex carries the highest risk of transmitting HIV.
If you are not absolutely sure of your sex partner's HIV status, you need to
protect yourself by using a condom during any sexual activities.

· Promotion of unprotected anal intercourse under the influence of
recreational drugs whether it be on the Internet chat lines or through other
ways should not be condoned. It is a sure way of increasing HIV transmission
among our community and works against all our interests. AfA would like gay
websites to take down such postings

· While most HIV+ gay men have taken measures to protect their
partners and themselves, there remains a small number who make deliberate
attempts to spread HIV. It is very difficult to identify and pin-point this
group of individuals. If you have information about such activities, you
should post them on the Internet channels.

There are many reasons why people still engage in unprotected anal sex.
While
we will try our best to educate and inform, we also hope that other
socially-conscious and informed members of the gay community will help to
spread the word as well.

We would like to encourage the community to stay vigilant to help curb the
spread of virus. Together, we can stop AIDS now.

Action for AIDS

Subject: HIV Infected in Singapore

Hi there,

I am from (deleted). I was tested HIV positive in Singapore last January
2008. I had my two tests before that: September 2007 in [another country]
and December 18, 2007 (DSC Clinic in Singapore.); both negative results.

I had unprotected sex with male Chinese Singaporean on December 14. Then
tested HIV positive for my employment requirements in end January. I was not
able to inform the guy about my health condition because I deleted his
contacts in my mobile phone after that meeting. I know it was him who
infected me.

Today, I came across him in gay site for singaporean men with this message:

"hi me flex chn (details deleted)..ru into raw chem fuck?"

I would like to believe that he's out there in Singapore trying to lure
everyone for an unprotected sex and not telling them about their HIV status.

Though nothing will change my HIV status right now, I believe I will save a
lot of guys from further destruction if he's really HIV positive. With
Singapore's small population there's a big chance of meeting an HIV positive
person like him.

I am willing to provide his photo and mobile number for proper action by
concerned authorities.

I love Singapore. I am looking forward to have a good life there but all was
lost. I am not blaming anyone nor him but at the end of the day... it will
be good if I spare others from the stigma of being HIV positive guy.

Thanks,
[name removed]
